074.001 Why is the Prophet Muhammad (S) called المدثر ?

يَاأَيُّهَا الْمُدَّثِّرُ (74.1)

 

After seeing Gabriel : When the Prophet (S) came from the cave Hira he was feeling very anxious after seeing the angel Gabriel for the first time in his life. He went straight to his wife and would have probably been shivering due to anxiety and have felt cold. As this usually happens with flu like illnesses the Prophet (S) told his wife to دَثِّرُونِي وَصُبُّوا عَلَيَّ مَاءً بَارِداً cover me and cool me with cold water. When people feel cold they liked to be wrapped up. Hence he was المدثر the wrapped up one.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهَ صلى الله عليه وسلم: جَاوَرْتُ بِغَارِ حِرَاءَ فَلَمَّا قَضَيْتُ جِوَارِي، هَبَطْتُ فَنُودِيتُ، فَنَظَرْتُ عَنْ يَمِينِي فَلَمْ أَرَ شَيْئاً، وَنَظَرْتُ عَنْ شِمَالِي فَلَمْ أَرَ شَيْئاً، وَنَظَرْتُ أَمَامِي فَلَمْ أَرَ شَيْئاً، وَنَظَرْتُ خَلْفِي فَلَمْ أَرَ شَيْئاً، فَرَفْعَتْ رَأْسِي فَرَأَيْتُ شَيْئاً، فَأَتَيْتُ خَدِيجَةَ فَقُلْتُ: دَثِّرُونِي وَصُبُّوا عَلَيَّ مَاءً بَارِداً. قَالَ فَدَثَّرُونِي، وَصَبُّوا عَلَيَّ مَاءً بَارِداً، قَالَ فَنَزَلَتْ {يَا أَيُّهَا المُدَّثِّرُ} . وَمَعْنَى الآيَةِ: يَا أَيُّهَا المَتَدَثِّرُ بِثِيَابِكَ، رُعْباً وَفَرَقاً مِنْ رُؤْيَةِ المَلَكِ عِنْدَ نُزُولِ الوَحْيِ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ.
